I'm Back & I've Been Booking Across the USA

You’ve probably wondered where I’ve been for so long now…I’ve been up to my eyeballs in projects and other “teacher” stuff, but today I get to share with you the biggest project I have been working on!

I am a huge fan of children’s literature – I don’t know many teachers who aren’t - and I have been working with an amazing group of bloggers on the project Booking across the USA!

http://growingbookbybook.com/sample-page/

I am so excited to share this project with you…and use it in my classroom.  What a better way to share the United States with our kids than through literature!?  I am in LOVE!

At first I thought this was going to be an easy project, find a book that features a person or place in your state, and create a unit or activity about it. Ha – was I wrong!!  There are tons of great books about North Carolina and the people who live here. So I decided to choose a “theme” of sorts.  I chose the Wright Brothers because I believe that children learn social studies and science best by reading authentic literature – it is easier for them to connect the material with their own experiences & because there are a ton of great books at all reading levels about the Wright Brothers.

The book I am featuring is the Newbery Medal Winner The Wright Brothers: How They Invented the Airplane.

These activities can be used with any book about the Wright Brothers. You can download these by clicking on the picture below.

The materials that I have for you are:
  • Ran (Reading & Analyzing Non-Fiction) Graphic Organizer
  • Comprehension Response - Poetry Activity
  • Be an Inventor Writing Assignment
  • Making Words Activity
  • Achievement Award

I loved this project so much that I created a whole literacy unit about the Wright Brothers that you can find at my TpT store.

Sunday Social & Bit by the Bug!

I am linking up with Ashley Lately for her Sunday Social.  I am so excited to join up today!!  Today is her 3 year blogaversary!  Congratulations – I am in awe!!

1. What is your ideal way to relax?
I love reading!! I belong to a book club, and up until this year I have kept track of each book I’ve read.  It is an obsession!!  If I’m not reading you can find me playing games on my phone…I really need to upgrade to an iPad (hint, hint to one of the guys in my life!)

2. Where is your favorite place to be?
In the Mitten!  I miss home so much – the family and people, but also the feeling of being home.  I am looking forward to a day when I can spend a few uninterrupted weeks up north with my parents!

3. Who do you consider your biggest role model?
My mom - My mom is my best friend and biggest fan.  She is the strongest and most amazing woman I know…. and the one true lady who has been with me through EVERYTHING!!

4. What does your life look like in 3 years?
Whoa – I have no idea.  3 years ago I wouldn’t have seen myself where I am now, so I am just along on this journey and making the best of each day.  I know that I will continue to be surrounded by the people I love, and to me, that is the most important thing of all.  Hopefully within the next three years we can add a new puppy to the mix though!

5. If you could go back and change one decision, what would it be?
Not one.  Each decision, good or bad, has made me the person I am today.  I know that is so cliché, but it is true.  There have been many difficult journey’s in my life and I hated them when I was experiencing them, but they taught me something, lots of lessons learned.

6. What is your biggest accomplishment in life so far?
My boys!  They are the most amazing accomplishments.  I cannot take even half of the credit for the young men they have become, but they simply amaze me every day.  After that, graduating from college.  Going to school and being a full time mom was tough stuff, but worth every minute.

I thought I had gotten through the "sick season" free and was about to celebrate whe I was bit by the bug!  Drats!  Although I have been trying to rest (I can't afford to take a break!) I was bitten by the Creativity Bug!  I hate when that happens - I can't even shut my mind off long enough to relax!

Anywho, I have a new product - Flower Power Compound WordMatch-up. I am ready for spring!  And my kids need to work on compound words so it's the perfect pair!

I also wanted to share an amazing giveaway at Mrs. Mc's page! She has TONS of great stuff!  Only one day left!

Have an amazing Sunday (yes, that is a compound word)!

Great Giveaways & January Currently

I wanted to feature some giveaways today – what a great way to kick off 2013!  There are 3 major giveaways for some just as major accomplishments happening right now!

Jessica at The Second Grade Nest is having a 500 follower giveaway.  Congrats to Jessica on reaching 500 followers at her TpT store!  Wow – that is amazing!!

Ms. Jones Junction (I love the name of Crystal’s blog!) is also having a giveaway!  She now has 200 followers!! Ah-mazing!!  If you win her giveaway you get a winner’s choice gift from my store!

Liz over at The Happy Teacher is ringing in the New Year with a giveaway! She has over 70 products that you can win…including one of my favorites – a Starbucks giftcard!!

And…finally, I am linking up with Farley – I can’t pass up a Currently!!  Especially the first one of the year!!!  Here is what is currently happening in my small world.

And, no, I am not ready to head back to school tomorrow.  I still have so much to print and copy; but I will be there early, with a smile on my face, ready to set up my room and finish up the last half of the year with my kids.  Yes, I said the last half!  It is hard to believe we are almost there people!! Whew – what a wild ride!!

Enjoy the first day of the New Year!!!

Holy Guacamole - 100 Followers!!

I am over the moon excited!!!  I can’t believe my little bloggy place has reached over 100 followers!  Honestly, I wasn’t sure anyone would follow me when I began this big adventure…and I am still surprised at how many of you do!

I really have to tell you I am amazed at the awesome and incredible friendships that I have made over the past few months.  The world really is smaller than I thought; while I love to read about the incredible teachers and things that are happening here in the United States I also enjoy reading blogs by my teaching friends overseas.  I would love to teach abroad someday…when my kids are grown, but before I have grandbabies!  Not that either of those are happening soon... So the fact that I have followers in Spain and Australia is simply incredible to me.

Over 45 incredible blogs and TpT sellers have donated their products to be a part of my AMAZING giveaway!!  I have had to break my giveaway into smaller bundles – what?!?! I never thought I would get to say that!!!  Yayyy me!! Anywho… you can enter for one or all of the bundles, simply follow the sellers TpT store, blog, Facebook, or Pinterest boards.  Yes – that means amazing & free ideas!!

Blogging for the Classroom & Great Giveaways

This will probably be my last Wednesday blog for awhile! I am heading back to school tomorrow – it’s track-in time! My time off has flown by, but I’m ready to go back knowing that next month we’ll get a little time off for the holidays.

This next track-in does seem to be my longest stretch though – getting through the winter months is just as hard for a year-round teacher.  I remember teaching traditional and thinking knowing spring break would never arrive!!  On a more serious note, I have some questions for my bloggy friends…

Do you have a blog for your class?  Do you use your personal blog as a classroom blog?

I’m thinking about starting a blog for my students and their families. I know, really?! like I need one more thing on my plate. I already have my Blackboard site, but I don’t use it that much. I find that blogging is way easier. Please let me know what you do because I’m curious and would love your opinions before I start something I shouldn’t…or start something that would be fantastic!! I know I can count on my virtual teacher friends :)

Here are some great giveaways that I am excited to be a part of right now. You know I love a great giveaway!!

Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour – an extra hour to get some work done! Yayyyy!!

Dropping like Flies and Giveaways!

My students dropped like flies today! Seriously! I started the day with 20 students, by lunch I was down to 17, and by the end of the day 15! Most of you probably already know what happened….yes, STREP THROAT!! Ugh!

By the time I left my room, I had scrubbed and cleaned everything I could!!! I am not getting sick – I’m just not doing it! I don’t have the time or energy to waste! Nope, not doing it!

I can hardly remember what we did in class today because every time I turned around one of my babies was leaving! On a positive note, my kids LOVED watching I’m Just a Bill today. They were so excited and amazed to know that the President doesn’t make all the laws and that there are other people making decisions in the government. Yayyy!!! Hopefully they shared something new at home tonight – I love when they go home and tell their parents a new fact they learned. It makes them feel so important and successful.
